How to reduce plastic waste

How to reduce plastic waste | Fruidel: Office Fruit & Milk Delivery UK Wide Posted August 5th, 2019 by Fruidel Team We’ve all seen the headlines about the huge environmental problems caused by single-use plastics. Governments and corporations have a responsibility to take action – but what can we do to cut down our personal plastic footprints? Here’s our 9 top tips: 1. Carry a reusable bottle In the UK we use over 35 million plastic bottles every day! Carrying a reusable bottle is a great way to cut your plastic use and save money too! There’s even an app that tells you where you can refill your bottle for free! 2. Say no to plastic straws Plastic straws are bad news for our oceans. Next time you order a drink, think about whether you need a straw – and if you don’t, just say no! You can also ask your local pub to stop adding straws to drinks as standard and offer paper straws to those who want one. 3. Take a reusable coffee cup 2.5 billion coffee cups are thrown away every year in the UK – and less than 1 in 400 are recycled. Carry a reusable cup with you – some cafes even offer a small discount if you use your own cup (and if they don’t ask them why not!) 4. Avoid excessive food packaging Whether it’s making different choices in the supermarket or choosing a different place to shop, we can all try and cut down the plastic we buy. And as an added bonus, loose fruit and veg is often cheaper than pre-packaged alternatives! 5. Use refill stations for detergents There are some products where it’s difficult to avoid a plastic container (for example washing up liquid or laundry liquid) – the good news is that there are an increasing amount of places where you can refill your old bottles. 6. Say no to disposable cutlery We’ve all been there – caught out in a cafe or at a train station when we’ve bought a salad or a yogurt but the only cutlery on offer is plastic! Whilst it’s hard to plan for every opportunity, consider carrying a spoon or fork (or spork!) in your bag or keeping cutlery in your desk at work. 7. Get your milk delivered Although the early morning sound of a milk float is not as common as it used to be, there are still lots of places in the UK where you can get milk delivered in glass bottles – which are then collected and reused. 8. Avoid microbeads The good news is that the UK government have announced a ban on microbeads! However until the ban comes into force in 2018, there will still be products on the shelves, so keep checking those labels before you buy and avoid products containing polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and nylon. 9. Carry a shopping bag Since the plastic bag charge was introduced in England, there’s been a massive 85% drop in their use. Many of us are used to carrying an extra bag with us – if you still find it hard to remember, try a foldaway one that you can carry in your normal day bag. Making just a few small changes can have a big impact on the amount of plastic we use on a day-to-day basis. Does an apple a day really keep the doctor away?

Does An Apple A Day Keep The Doctor Away? | Fruidel Posted July 16th, 2019 by Fruidel Team It’s one of the most recognisable expressions around: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” But could the common apple honestly help a person to maintain perfect health? The first printed mention of this saying can be found in the February 1866 issue of the publication “Notes and Queries.” The publication printed the proverb like this: “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” Nearly 150 years later, variations of this adage are still quoted. It’s unlikely that the saying would have maintained such popularity if there wasn’t some truth to it, right? Here are a few of the apple’s health benefits Pectin — Pectin is a form of soluble fiber than lowers both blood pressure and glucose levels. It can also lower the levels of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol in the body. Pectin, like other forms of fiber, helps maintain the health of the digestive system. Apples are an excellent source of pectin. Boron — A nutrient found in abundance in apples, boron supports strong bones and a healthy brain. Quercetin — A flavonoid, this nutrient shows promise for reducing the risk of various cancers, including cancers in the lungs and breast. It may also reduce free radical damage. Free radicals develop when atoms in the body’s cells have unpaired electrons, which can lead to damage to different parts of the cell, including DNA. Quercetin may neutralize free radical damage, which has been implicated in a variety of age-related health problems, including Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin C — Vitamin C boosts immunity, which helps maintain overall health. Phytonutrients — Apples are rich in a variety of phytonutrients, including vitamins A and E and beta carotene. These compounds fight damage from free radicals and can have a profound affect on health, including reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes and asthma. The benefits of eating apples An apple a day can reduce the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and many types of cancer. But would you be able to avoid the doctor entirely just by eating a bunch of the forbidden fruit? Not likely. Various studies show health benefits when participants eat an apple between three and five times a week, but all ailments cannot be cured by diet alone. Are other fruits just as healthy When choosing drinks, apple juice barely makes the top 10. Pomegranate juice, wine and purple grape juice are high in antioxidants, with apple juice in the tenth spot, right behind tea. One of the things that makes apples so incredibly healthy is the amount of fiber they contain, but that’s lost during juicing. So does a daily apple succeed in keeping the doctor away? While an apple a day will go a long way toward keeping the doctor away, most nutritionists recommend a varied diet. In addition to apples, fill your shopping cart with citrus fruits, tropical treats like mangos, and a variety of berries, which pack a nutritional punch. Eating several servings of a varied selection of fruits each day is truly the best way to keep the doctor away. Back to blog

Say No To Plastic | The Eco-friendly Solution

Say No To Plastic – The Eco-friendly Solution – Reducing Fruit Waste Posted July 8th, 2019 by Fruidel Team Fruidel Eco-friendly Solutions Help to protect our ocean and change your attitude towards plastic Take the pledge REFUSE – Say ‘NO’ to single use plastic when ever you can. Retailers will try to force you to take plastic bags. Say ‘NO’. Take reusable shopping bags. If you go for a drink refuse the straws. If suppliers insist that products have to be wrapped ask if they have an alternative. REDUCE – Look at the plastic that you use. Are there alternatives and could you cut it down? Do you need to buy bottled water, or could you use a refillable solution. Are there alternatives to the plastic products you are using, if so try them out. REUSE – There are many products out there that are reusable rather than disposable. Look for cutlery, straws and packaging that can be used again and again. Not only will it help the oceans, it will probably save you money as well. RECYCLE – If you have tried to refuse and reduce and there are no reusable items available you may need a plastic product. Make sure you check that it can be recycled when you have finished with it. Then don’t forget to recycle it. Fruidel’s Pledge Fruidel promises to use compostable clear wrap completely plastic free. Tips for Eating Healthy and How Fruidel Can Help

Tips for Eating Healthy and How Fruidel Can Help Posted July 3rd, 2019 by Fruidel Team Are you looking to make healthier choices in your diet? Eating healthy can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be, with Fruidel’s help, it can be easier than ever. Tips for Eating Healthy The Key to a Healthy Diet Eating the right amount of calories for your activity level is the key to a healthy diet. Balancing the energy you consume with the energy you use will help you maintain a healthy weight. Eating too much will lead to weight gain, while not eating enough will lead to weight loss. Eating a variety of foods ensures that your body is getting all the nutrients it needs. The more colorful your plate, the better. Aim to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Get Your 5 A Day with Fruits and Vegetables It’s recommended that you eat at least five portions of fruits and vegetables every day. This may sound like a lot, but it’s easier than you think. A portion of fresh, canned, or frozen fruit and vegetables is 80 grams, and a portion of dried fruit is 30 grams. A 150ml glass of fruit juice, vegetable juice, or smoothie also counts as one portion, but limit yourself to one glass a day as these drinks are sugary and can damage your teeth. Fruidel’s Fruit Basket Options Getting your five a day has never been easier with Fruidel’s fruit box delivery service.
