At Fruidel, we demonstrate how office fruit deliveries can address hunger and environmental challenges. FareShare and Fruidel: saving food, feeding people
FareShare Greater Manchester recently profiled us as a supplier in their Supplier Spotlight: Fruidel article. FareShare is a charity that takes surplus food and passes it on to community kitchens and food banks. We deliver fresh fruit to offices across Manchester. When some boxes are too ripe to send to paying clients, We donate them to FareShare instead of throwing them away. Those donations are transformed into nutritious supplies for community members. In 2024, FareShare Greater Manchester redistributed 2,000 tonnes of good-to-eat surplus food to 250 community groups, and Fruidel has donated more than 29 tonnes of fruit over the past five years, including a single delivery of 5.5 tonnes. A Guardian report found that UK households throw away about 4.5 million tonnes of edible food each year, most of the food wasted after it leaves farms. By giving away fruit that cannot be sold, Fruidel tackles this mountain of waste and gets more fresh food into people’s homes.
Why food waste matters?
Wasting food has real consequences. Globally more than a third of all food never reaches a platewastemanaged.co.uk. In 2022 consumers binned roughly 1.05 billion tonnes of food while 783 million people were hungry. Food loss and waste account for 8–10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, nearly five times the emissions from aviation. In Britain about 9.5 million tonnes of food is wasted each year, much of which is perfectly edible. Wasted food uses nearly a third of agricultural land and costs the global economy USD 1 trillion each year. Cutting waste reduces emissions and makes sure more people are fed. That is why FareShare GM and Fruidel’s simple act of donating unwanted fruit matters so much.
Fruidel’s wider commitments
Our care goes beyond donations. The company uses vans fitted with a fuel additive called AdBlue to lower emissions and packs fruit in biodegradable materials. Customers return boxes so they can be reused. For every new business client we plant a tree through International Tree Foundation (ITF) and supports charities like Macmillan Cancer Support.
The return of the milkman is real, the number of households using milk delivery jumped from around 500,000 to over 700,000 during the pandemic and is still 21% higher than before. Back in the 1970s, nearly all homes had a milkman, but now it’s just about 3%. People love it again because they want to support local dairies and it’s convenient. Around 90% ask for glass bottles that can be reused about 25 times and one leading service delivers about 100 million glass pints a year. With the UK producing nearly 15 billion litres of milk and Brits drinking 165 million cups of tea daily. Both our officemilkdelivery.com and officemilk.myweekdays.co.uk, services keep the kettle full while letting offices make an ethical choice. We also deliver seasonal fruit through our office fruit delivery and officefruit.myweekdays.co.uk to bring healthy snacks straight to your desk.

The business case for kindness
When it comes to corporate social responsibility (CSR), kindness is good for business. Surveys show that roughly three quarters of executives believe responsible practices lower brand risk and more than four in five employees would leave a firm that doesn’t live up to its stated values. Nearly eight in ten investors look at sustainability reports before deciding where to put their money. Another poll found that almost all employees think businesses should lead with purpose and about seven in ten want to work for a company that gives back. Participation in volunteering and giving programmes is growing fast; in 2023 employees donated £31 million through Benevity to nearly 13,000 nonprofits.
Fruidel’s role
Here’s how we implement these principles within our operations. For every fruit box we order for our offices, we donates another box to FareShare Greater Manchester. How everyone can help
Reducing food waste requires contributions from organisations and individuals. Businesses can track what they throw away and team up with organisations like FareShare to donate edible leftovers. Employees can organise surplus collections and encourage leaders to support suppliers that donate unsold produce. At home you can plan meals, store food correctly and freeze leftovers. Repurposing overripe fruit or utilising stale bread to make croutons can significantly reduce waste. If every household cut waste by just a kilogram a week, it would free up millions of meals for those in need. Your small actions multiply when repeated across offices and households around the country.
Fuel CSR by supporting FareShare and Fruidel
Food waste, hunger and climate change are connected problems. Millions of tonnes of edible food are thrown away each year, producing emissions and costing billions. Encouragingly, responsible companies demonstrate viable alternatives. Surveys reveal that people reward businesses that act responsibly.
By redistributing surplus fruit, reducing packaging, cutting emissions and planting trees, we prove that you can enjoy healthy snacks at work and help your community at the same time. We encourage you to evaluate your supply chain and consider vendors that prioritise social and environmental impact.
